Alcohol Relapse and When Helping the Alcoholic Becomes Detrimental

Written by Suzi
on July 2nd, 2009

It is remarkable to bring up something that family members who have been negatively affected by the alcoholism of another family member apparently do not grasp. It seems to be that by shielding the alcohol dependent person with falsehoods and deceitfulness to those outside the family, these well-intentioned family members have in actual fact created a condition that makes it easier for the alcohol dependent person to persist and advance with his or her damaging, destructive existence.

Clearly, instead of helping the alcohol addicted person and themselves, these family members have in fact become enablers who have inadvertently helped worsen the alcohol dependent individual’s drinking problems even more.

Relapses Can and Do Occur From Time to Time

Another key alcoholism issue concerns alcohol relapses. Relapses take place when an alcohol addicted person has successfully undergone alcohol dependency rehab and then resorts to drinking a number of weeks or months later. At first glance, this predicament flies in the face of logical thinking and looks so unrealistic that it forces one to speculate why anyone who has experienced the wretchedness of alcohol dependency can return to drinking a short while after successful alcohol treatment and in turn after reaching recovery. There are, to be sure, numerous reasonable reasons for this.

It should be mentioned, then again that alcoholism research that has centered on the long standing effects of alcohol dependency has demonstrated-proven that long after the alcohol addicted person has terminated his or her drinking, critical changes in the way in which the alcoholic’s brain works are still present. As a result, all a recovering alcohol addicted person has to do to involve himself or herself in behaviors that correspond with the alterations that have taken place in the brain is to begin drinking again.

The Need for An Important Lifestyle Change

There are additional reasons why many recovering alcohol addicted individuals return to drinking a few weeks or a few months after reaching sobriety. According to the alcohol addiction research literature, to make a successful recovery, the alcohol dependent individual needs new ways of responding and thinking in order to deal more efficiently with difficult alcohol-related circumstances that will take place.

Circumstances such as returning to the same alcohol addictive environment or to the same geographic location; interacting once again with friends from the days when the alcohol dependent person was drinking excessively; or familiar songs, smells, or activities—all of these conditions can elicit memories that can set off psychological tension or push hot buttons that influence the recovering alcohol addicted person to engage in abusive drinking once again. Sadly, all of these situations may not only negate long-term sobriety for the alcohol addicted person but they can also lead to relapse and as a result counteract one’s alcohol recovery.

Conclusion

In an attempt to “protect” the family alcohol dependent person, family members can in point of fact cause inadvertent destruction by enabling the destructive drinking behavior of the alcohol addicted individual.

The addiction research literature highlights the fact that most individuals who successfully complete alcohol therapy experience at least one relapse. Alcohol dependent persons and their family members need to know this so that they do not get defeated or overwhelmed when a relapse manifests itself.

Luckily, involvement in support groups such as Alcoholics Anonymous and follow-up therapy and training have resulted in more successful, lasting alcohol abuse and alcohol addiction therapeutic results, have helped reduce alcohol relapses, and have helped recovering alcohol addicted individuals achieve long lasting alcohol recovery.

Kaletra (Lopinavir)

Written by Suzi
on July 1st, 2009

Lopinavir was developed by Abbott in an attempt to improve on the AIDS resistance and serum protein-binding properties of the company’s earlier protease inhibitor, ritonavir. Administered alone, lopinavir has insufficient bioavailability; however, like several HIV protease inhibitors, its blood levels are greatly increased by low doses of ritonavir, a potent inhibitor of cytochrome P450 3A4. Abbott decided to employ a stretegy of co administering lopiavir with doses of rionavir and lopinavir is then marketed as a formulation containing ritonavir. Its the first multi drug capsule to have a drug not available individually.

Lopinavir/ritonavir was approved by the US FDA on 15 September 2000, and in Europe in April 2001. The patent will expire in 2016.

Abbott Laboratories was one of the earliest users of the Advanced Photon Source, a national synchrotron-radiation light source at Argonne National Laboratory. One early reseach project undertaken at the APS was HIV. Using x ray crystallography, researchers located the points of attack of HIV protease inhibitors, medication that block the breakdown of proteins. PI’s help stop HIV from making copies of itself by stopping the last step in the process when the virus attempts to replicate and out of that discovery came the drug lopinavir.

Eczema Causes

Written by Suzi
on June 29th, 2009

Eczema is a term used for a set of health conditions that make the skin become inflamed or irritated. The most common type of eczema known is called atopic dermatitis or atopic eczema. What does atopic mean? Well, atopic refers to a group of diseases characterized by the genetic predisposition to develop allergic conditions such as hay fever or asthma. This means that the problems are rooted in a genetic background and most of the time inherited. Although studies that you might come across while looking for information about eczema will tell you that eczema causes are not known, we can still discuss of a number of causes, mainly connected with the environments in which eczema patients live, and which influence the evolution of the condition significantly.

eczema cause

According to the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease, the prevalence of atopic eczema is growing, and it affects 9% to 30% of the U.S. population. Small children and infants are the most most exposed to atopical eczema. While many infants who develop the condition outgrow it by their second year of life, some people continue to go through such symptoms during their entire life. Nevertheless, with right form of treatment, the disease can be controlled in the most of the cases. The exact eczema causes remain a mystery, but studies indicate that the problem results from an over-reaction of the immune system to some chemical irritant factor or to a bacterium that normally lives on our skin. Another of the eczema causes seems to be the coexistence in the vicinity of family members with a history of other allergies and asthma; eczema is commonly found in such families.

causes of eczema

Among eczema causes, one that may also be considered in the case of patients who suffer flare-ups of this itchy rash, is the patients’ reaction to certain substances or conditions in the surrounding environments. Therefore, exposure to rough or coarse materials for some, feeling too cold or too hot in others’ cases, as well as getting in contact with household products (soap, detergents, etc) and living near animals may cause an eczema outbreak. Besides all these, colds and upper respiratory infections could also be blamed for this disease. To make things even worse, that is to further strengthen the disease, we have another element to consider: stress. Even if the disease is not contagious, people who suffer from eczema may never get cured completely; treatments do keep it under control, but the problem could outburst after years of recession.

The Dangers of GERD and Acid Reflux

Written by Suzi
on June 28th, 2009

“Is acid reflux really a serious problem?”

A lot of people think “Oh, it’s just heartburn. It’s no big deal.”

That attitude might be appropriate for some but very risky for others. There are some signs of possible serious problems you should be aware of.

The first thing to take into account is the extent of the symptoms. While it’s not 100% true, possibly dangerous cases of acid reflux are often associated with more severe symptoms.

The next thing to consider is the frequency of symptoms. If symptoms only occur twice a year, that’s less likely to be associated with serious disease than when symptoms are more frequent.

Keep in mind that the discomfort associated with of GERD result from acid backing up into the esophagus. The esophagus is injured by this acid. That injury can lead to rather severe problems.

I don’t want to go into much detail here but if you’re interested you can learn more about the possible complications of acid reflux at: Complications of Acid Reflux.

Another indicator that indicates medical evaluation is needed is if they have a respiratory symptom associated with their GERD. These respiratory symptoms often include asthma, wheezing, coughing or frequent colds and episodes of bronchitis.

These problems happen because in some people of these reflux can be so severe the acid actually backs up all the way to the top of the esophagus and goes into the windpipe. It’s clear that Obviously, having acid going into your larynx, windpipe and lungs isn’t a good thing.

I think with any health problem information is your friend.

A good site that I found for information on acid reflux is Treat Acid Reflux Now

You may particularly be interested in their page Is GERD Dangerous?

It’s important not to assume that Gerd and reflux are just minor problems that you can ignore. Certainly if you have any of the issues I described here you should get a medical evaluation rather than ignoring symptoms.
